As the name suggests, it features a glossy, mirror‑like finish as if coated with paint. It is manufactured by pulverizing genuine‑leather scraps into pulp and re‑forming them into leather sheets.
I. Classification by Surface Finish
1.Enamel Leather
As the name suggests, it features a glossy, mirror‑like finish as if coated with paint. It is manufactured by pulverizing genuine‑leather scraps into pulp and re‑forming them into leather sheets.
Care Tips: Wipe with a slightly damp cloth and air‑dry. Avoid scratches during use, as scuff marks will be highly visible.
2. Full‑grain Leather
Also known as smooth leather. It retains the simple, natural character of raw hide and is one of the most widely‑used leather types.
Care Tips: Apply matching‑color or neutral shoe polish with a bristle brush. Shoe polish and leather cream will bring out its shine. A wide range of leather‑care products are applicable.
3. Waxing Leather
Like ordinary full‑grain leather, it receives no surface coating and only undergoes dyeing. It is an uncoated hide with distinct grain patterns and a smooth, substantial handfeel. However, it is susceptible to water absorption and staining.
Care Tips: Use dedicated cleaners and conditioners. Water‑based cleaning or care products are not permitted.
4. Matte leather、Nubuck
Made from cowhide whose top surface has been abraded to create a velvety nap.
5. Suede leather、hunting leather
Also called split‑fleece leather. It has a rough, non‑glossy surface. Advantages include good breathability, wear resistance and high wrinkle resistance. Its main drawback is that it readily absorbs dust and gets soiled.
II. Classification by Raw Material
1. Cowhide / Oxhide
Yellow cowhide features round, dense and evenly distributed pores. Water buffalo hide has larger but sparser pores and a less fine texture compared with yellow cowhide.
2. Sheepskin / Goatskin
It has flat‑oval fine pores arranged in fish‑scale‑like clusters. Several pores form one group. The hide is soft and highly elastic.
3. Pigskin / Hogskin
Its large round pores penetrate obliquely into the hide, mostly in groups of three, forming tiny triangular patterns on the surface. It has relatively poor elasticity and a coarse texture.
4. Horsehide
Horsehide bears flat‑oval pores, more distinct than those of sheepskin. The material feels firm and stiff, with pores neatly grouped in regular patterns.
5. Crocodile / Alligator Leather
Crocodiles have low population numbers, slow growth rates and high farming costs. Only the narrow belly section of crocodile hide is usable. For these reasons, crocodile leather is regarded as the platinum among leathers, celebrated for luxury and rarity, and is largely reserved for high‑end watch straps. It is prized for its naturally gradient square scale patterns. Though low in elasticity, it is extremely sturdy. With proper maintenance, it gains increasing luster and suppleness over time.
